The Gates of the Arctic National Park is the northernmost national park in the United States, as it’s situated north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. That’s not where the grandiosity of this natural wonder ends it’s also the second largest national park in the US at over 8 million acres (it’s slightly larger in area than Belgium!). Gates of the Arctic protects part of the Brooks Mountain Range and is unique in the sense that there are no roads inside of the actual park. Due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure (like roads and highways), it’s the least-visited park in the National Park System. As a true existing part of the ‘final frontier’, the Gates of the Arctic wilderness borders up against the Noatak Wilderness, forming the largest contiguous wilderness in the United States.
